About the composition
Singularity here refers to the “Technological Singularity” that has been well discussed in the media. Koan is a type unsolvable riddle or paradoxical saying used in Zen Buddhism to promote a shift in consciousness. Contemplation of the apparent inevitability and concomitant uncertainty of the technological singularity had (and continues to have) a similarly disruptive effect on me. The sculpture references three distinct codes of information transfer - the base pairs of DNA (our origin), the letters of our English alphabet (our present culture) and the binary code of ones and zeroes (into which we seem to be merging).
This piece materialised, as it were, one digital sculpting action at a time from my imagination into the digital realm, and then was downloaded one layer of 3D printing at a time into the physical world. As you view the sculpture on your smart phone beside the physical sculpture, I hope you become more intensely aware of the strangeness of the time through which we are living, and the strangeness of experiences to come.
