Various New Works 2021

“Undiscovered” Oil on panel 61 x 45 cm 2021

Personal computers are now fast enough to allow us to generate 3D fractals, fascinating and endlessly detailed spaces that are at once familiar and alien, but are entirely generated by iterations of simple formulas.  Here I brought together elements of retro scifi novel cover art and ancient greek sculpture to make a kind of goddess of wonder and exploration.

“The Architecture of the Sky II” Oil on linen, 1.1 x 1.1m

I find myself compelled to approach landscape painting as an attempt to compress the overwhelming experience of the immersive or monumental space of the natural world onto the small flat surface of the canvas or sketchbook. I am exploring here the integration of the comprehensible space of three-point perspective prisms to assist with this expression.

I like to juxtapose simple geometric form and natural form, in a variety of ways to different purposes. In this case the subject was extremely impressive in scale/ sense of monumentality, and flooded with the raw potential power of nature, in particular the weather patterns changing. I liked the delicacy of the line against the muscular solidity of the mountain
